What is NFC and What is it Used for in 2024?

When we talk about NFC (Near Field Communication), it translates to Near Field Communication. It's an apt term, as it describes a technology based on the physical proximity of two devices to function. It operates using a high frequency, specifically at 13.56 MHz.

This technology evolved from RFID tags, common in transport cards and store security systems. Designed primarily for use in smartphones, NFC allows the exchange of information between devices that are within a very short distance, typically up to a maximum of 15-20 centimeters.

How does it work? When two devices approach each other, they generate an electromagnetic field through induction, allowing the exchange of data at speeds of up to 424 Kbps. Although capable of transferring data, its limited speed makes it more suitable for identifying and authenticating devices and people.

A significant advantage of NFC is the direct communication and no need for prior configuration between two devices, simplifying the exchange of information. The reduced range increases the security of interactions, as both devices must be close to begin the exchange.

There are two types of operation in NFC technology:

  • Active mode: Where both devices with an NFC chip create an electromagnetic field for data transfer.
  • Passive mode: In this case, only one device is active, generating the necessary field for the other device to exchange information.
