NFC: What It Is and How Didit Uses It to Verify Identities

January 23, 2024

You go to your favorite restaurant for dinner, get ready to pull out your wallet to pay and… you realize you left it at home! Once the initial shock and the discomfort of thinking it was lost pass, you remember that, fortunately, you have linked your bank card to your mobile phone, so you can pay your share without any problem. At that moment, although you may not know it, you are about to use NFC technology.

Paying with a mobile phone is just one of the many uses of this technology. Thanks to it, among other things, you can identify yourself at ATMs (without having to insert the card into the reader), send and share information between devices, or create various automations linked to a specific device.

Those are some of the uses, but there are more. In the case of Didit, we use NFC technology to verify identities. If you want to know more, we tell you more in the following paragraphs.

What is NFC and What is it Used for in 2024?

When we talk about NFC (Near Field Communication), it translates to Near Field Communication. It's an apt term, as it describes a technology based on the physical proximity of two devices to function. It operates using a high frequency, specifically at 13.56 MHz.

This technology evolved from RFID tags, common in transport cards and store security systems. Designed primarily for use in smartphones, NFC allows the exchange of information between devices that are within a very short distance, typically up to a maximum of 15-20 centimeters.

How does it work? When two devices approach each other, they generate an electromagnetic field through induction, allowing the exchange of data at speeds of up to 424 Kbps. Although capable of transferring data, its limited speed makes it more suitable for identifying and authenticating devices and people.

A significant advantage of NFC is the direct communication and no need for prior configuration between two devices, simplifying the exchange of information. The reduced range increases the security of interactions, as both devices must be close to begin the exchange.

There are two types of operation in NFC technology:

  • Active mode: Where both devices with an NFC chip create an electromagnetic field for data transfer.
  • Passive mode: In this case, only one device is active, generating the necessary field for the other device to exchange information.

Didit and the Use of NFC to Confirm Identities

What if we told you that Didit uses this revolutionary technology to verify people's identities? Thanks to the chip incorporated in your ID card or passport, and along with our biometric development based on artificial intelligence, we can confirm that the person on the other end is who they claim to be.

It is our way of working towards our mission: to humanize the internet and create a much safer space for people, where they have absolute control over their data and privacy.

Understanding Didit's KYC Process

Didit makes passing the KYC process very simple. All you need is your documentation (either ID card or passport, as both options have a chip) and a mobile phone. Don't worry, because your mobile probably already has this technology. After that, you just need to follow a few simple steps, and before you know it, your identity will be verified.
