National eID schemes by country: the 2026 reference list
The main national eID scheme in each country, in five regional tables: who runs it, how many people use it, its level of assurance and whether a private business can connect. Checked on 5 October 2026.

In short
A national eID is a government-recognised electronic identity a person can use online. About 89 countries offer one that works for remote authentication, and this page lists the main scheme in many of them, with who runs it, how many people use it, its level of assurance and whether a private business can connect.[1]
- In Sweden and Denmark, one eID covers nearly every adult.[2][3]
- Some large schemes, such as DigiD, are open only to public tasks, so a document route is still needed.[4]
- Every EU Member State must offer an EUDI Wallet by 24 December 2026.[5]
National eID schemes differ in what a business cares about: who issues them, whether a private company may connect, and what a check costs. This reference replaces our earlier global comparison and uses operators' and regulators' own figures as of 5 October 2026. "Users" names the metric each operator publishes: accounts, cards or logins; where no user total is verified, the cell says so.
National eID schemes in Europe
Europe has the densest map. The European Commission lists the schemes each Member State has notified under eIDAS, at level low, substantial or high.[6] Several of the most used schemes are not on that list.

From 10 July 2027, the AMLR accepts an identity document or electronic identification at level substantial or high.[87] The UK cancelled its planned national digital ID on 21 July 2026.[90] Switzerland postponed its E-ID launch on 30 June 2026 with no new date (see our Swiss E-ID guide and Switzerland page).[91] Norway's regulator gave notice on 24 September 2026 that six former BankID issuers did not meet level high.[12]
How to design a national eID waterfall for many countries
The pattern that scales across countries is a waterfall: offer the eID the user already has, and fall back to a document check when there is none.
1Detect the user's country
From the user's choice, phone number or document.
A national eID is connected for that country
Offer the eID first
Signed name, date of birth and level.
Document route
Chip reading, liveness and face match.
2Screen and decide
Sanctions and PEP screening, then your decision.
What the user sees:
Choose how to verify
Use the electronic ID of your country.
National eID
Use an ID document instead
1The flow offers the eIDs of the user's country.
Continue on your phone
Scan the code, or check the code in your eID app matches.
2On a computer: a QR code (MitID, BankID, FTN) or a code to compare (Smart-ID, Mobile-ID).
Approve the request
The PIN is typed only in the eID app.
Approve
3The user approves in the scheme's own app.
You are verified
- Full nameShared
- Date of birthShared
- AddressNot shared
4Signed attributes return to the business.
- Match your top countries to the rows above.
- Keep a document route with chip reading everywhere.
- Record the level of assurance of each check.
- Plan EUDI Wallet acceptance before 24 December 2027.
For the technical side of each connection, see the eID API integration guide.
How Didit helps with eID verification across countries
Didit runs five national eIDs live in seven countries: MitID ($0.25), BankID Sweden ($0.20), the Finnish Trust Network ($0.25), Smart-ID ($0.20; Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium) and Mobile-ID ($0.20; Estonia, Lithuania). They return a signed full name, date of birth, a scheme identifier and level of assurance, with no address or portrait. MitID's identifier is pseudonymised, not the CPR number. iDIN, itsme, BankID Norway, the German eID card, FranceConnect, Bank iD, Diia, UAE PASS and gov.br are on our roadmap, and EUDI Wallet acceptance is coming soon. Didit adds other schemes on request. In every country, the document route with NFC chip reading, liveness and face match works in the same workflow, followed by AML screening. Turn on digital ID wallets in the console under Workflows, ID Verification, Countries, Wallets accepted. Prices are per completed sign-in; full KYC costs $0.33.
Didit provides
- Live national eIDs and a document route in one workflow
- Signed attributes and evidence of every check
- AML screening
Stays with you
- Which eIDs and levels you accept per country
- The risk assessment and the onboarding decision
- The liability under your AML rules
Accept the eIDs your customers already have
Turn on the live eIDs, keep documents as the fallback, and tell us which scheme you need next.
Key takeaways
- About 89 countries offer a government-recognised credential that works online.
- How you get access matters more than who issues the eID.
- A document route stays necessary in every country.
- Firms required by law or contract to use strong user authentication must accept the EUDI Wallet by 24 December 2027; micro and small firms are exempt.[5]
Frequently asked questions
What is a national eID?
A national eID is an electronic identity recognised by a government that a person uses to prove who they are online. It can be a chip card, an app or a bank login. In the EU, notified schemes carry a level of assurance: low, substantial or high.[6]
How many countries have a national digital ID?
About 89 countries, roughly 45%, offer a government-recognised credential for remote authentication. About 2.8 billion people have no digital ID usable online.[1]
Which national eIDs can private companies use?
Bank-issued and operator-run schemes are usually open: BankID Sweden through banks and resellers, MitID through certified brokers, Smart-ID through SK or brokers.[9][8][14] Germany, Austria and Italy open their state schemes after an authorisation or registration.[20][23][29] DigiD is limited to bodies with a statutory public task.[4]
Which country has the highest eID adoption?
Sweden and Denmark are near universal: 99.9% of Swedes aged 18 to 67 have BankID and 97.2% of Danes over 15 have an active MitID.[2][3] In Singapore, 97% of citizens and residents aged 15+ use Singpass.[85]
Are national eIDs free for businesses?
Rarely. Japan waived its per-check fees from January 2023 and China's service is free for connected platforms.[64][68] South Africa charges R10 per real-time register check, and Australia will ask businesses that use myID to contribute to its costs from 1 January 2027 at the latest.[81][70]
When must businesses accept the EUDI Wallet?
By 24 December 2027 for private relying parties that are required by law or contract to use strong user authentication, at the user's request. Micro and small enterprises are exempt. Member States must offer a wallet by 24 December 2026.[5]
What happened to the UK national digital ID?
The government cancelled it on 21 July 2026.[90] Since 26 February 2026, firms can meet Regulation 28 of the Money Laundering Regulations with certified, registered digital identity services.[48]
Do I need a separate integration for each country?
Per scheme, yes, unless a provider has already connected it. Each operator has its own route: brokers for MitID, banks or resellers for BankID Sweden, a state authorisation for the German eID card.[8][9][20]
