MitID alder: age verification with MitID in Denmark
How to check age with MitID: what a sign-in returns, Danish rules for gambling, alcohol and social media, the AltID age proof, the EU age app pilot, and how to add age estimation for users without MitID.

In short
"MitID alder" is Danish for "MitID age": checking how old someone is with Denmark's national electronic ID (eID). It works because the date of birth is a standard claim in a MitID sign-in, according to the documentation a certified MitID broker publishes.[14]
- MitID is issued from age 13, so holding one does not prove that a user is an adult.[4]
- Online casinos must use an eID such as MitID when a player opens an account.[5]
- MitID is live on Didit, with age estimation and a document route for users without it.
97.2% of people in Denmark over 15 have an active MitID.[2] An age answer comes back signed, not typed into a form.
This guide covers what a MitID age check returns, the rules by sector, AltID, the EU age app, and users with no MitID. To connect MitID, read MitID integration.
MitID alder: what MitID tells you about a user's age
MitID is the Danish national eID. The European Commission's overview lists it as notified under eIDAS, at levels of assurance Substantial and High.[3] It is primarily an app: the user approves actions with a swipe.[1]
MitID
Denmark's national electronic identification scheme
The date of birth is there by default. According to the attribute reference a certified MitID broker publishes, a standard sign-in returns the name, the date of birth, level-of-assurance claims and a MitID UUID, which is a pseudonym.[15] The CPR number (the Danish civil registration number) comes only through a "CPR match", where the user types it and the broker verifies it, or for authorised public bodies.[15]
You can ask for less. According to another certified broker's documentation, a dedicated age flow answers one threshold, for example 16, and returns only true or false.[14]
Having MitID is not an age signal. MitID is available from age 13, and a service may set a higher limit.[1][4] Read the date of birth or the age result every time.
| Flow | What your service receives | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MitID sign-in | Name, date of birth, pseudonymous UUID, level of assurance[15] | You open an account |
| Sign-in with CPR match | The same, plus a verified CPR number[15] | A rule makes you record the CPR number |
| Age-only MitID flow | The threshold and true or false[14] | You need no identity |
| AltID age proof | A proof of age; the agency's page names no thresholds[6] | The user holds the state app |
What the user sees in a MitID age check
The user starts on your site, enters a MitID user ID and approves in the MitID app with a swipe.[1] Without the app, they type a code from a code display.[1]

MitID age verification under Danish and EU rules
Our sources confirm one Danish sector rule that names MitID: online casino. The rest, on 5 October 2026, is a government proposal plus EU guidance.
| Sector | What the source says | Role of MitID | Status on 5 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online casino | An eID at account creation, first login from a new device and identity changes[5] | The example eID, at Substantial or higher[5] | In the Tax Agency's legal guide |
| Alcohol | EU guidelines expect age verification for online alcohol sales[10] | Not named in our sources | Danish age limits not covered here |
| Social media | Proposed limit of 15; 13 and 14 with parental consent[7] | The state app is offered to platforms[7] | Proposal; no enacted text found |
Gambling: the rule that names MitID
Denmark's executive order on online casino, as set out in the Danish Tax Agency's legal guide J.A.11.2, requires an eID at three moments: when a gambling account is created, at the first login from a new device, and when the customer's identity data changes.[5] The eID must come from a Danish national scheme or be approved by Spillemyndigheden.[5]

In English: if MitID is used, the assurance level must be Substantial or higher. The player must also give a name and a CPR number, and the operator must verify both.[5] A default MitID sign-in carries no CPR number, so a casino flow needs the CPR match step.[15] A player with no CPR number, a tourist for example, is outside the eID requirement and must be identified reliably another way.[5]
Alcohol: what we can and cannot confirm
Our sources do not cover Denmark's alcohol sales statutes, so check the age limits yourself. The Ministry of Digital Affairs named buying alcohol in a supermarket as a use for the state app's age proof.[7] The European Commission's guidelines under Article 28 of the Digital Services Act (DSA) list alcohol sales among the high-risk cases where platforms should use age verification, not estimation.[10]
Social media: a proposal for 15
On 22 October 2025 the Ministry of Digital Affairs announced a proposed national age limit for social media: a profile from the age of 15, or at 13 and 14 with parental consent.[7] Platforms would have to verify age, and Denmark would offer them the state app for it.[7] We found no enacted statute in our sources as of 5 October 2026, so treat the limit as planned.
Meanwhile, under the DSA guidelines, for minimum ages below 18, age estimation is acceptable when an independent third party provides it or the system is independently audited.[10] For adult-only content, estimation is a temporary alternative while suitable verification is not readily available.[10] See age verification in the EU.
AltID and the EU age verification app in Denmark
AltID is Denmark's official app for ID and proofs. It is open to everyone over 13 with a MitID and a CPR number, and its first version holds an ID card and an age proof.[6] The agency's page names no age thresholds. The app launched on 3 June 2026, according to TV 2.[9] By 4 August 2026, 281,390 citizens had created an AltID.[2]
AltID is also Denmark's EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet in the making: the Agency for Digital Government says it is implementing the wallet in stages.[8] Every Member State must provide one by 24 December 2026.[18]
The Commission's age verification blueprint is an app that proves a user is over 18 with no identity data in the proof. Proofs are issued in batches for one-time use, to prevent linking.[11] Denmark was among the first five Member States to take it up.[11] The project's technical portal lists Denmark among seven countries piloting it inside their national wallets during 2026.[13] On 29 April 2026 the Commission urged Member States to roll the app out by the end of the year, on its own or inside an EUDI Wallet.[12] How AltID's age proof maps to the blueprint is not stated in our sources. Users without MitID: combine MitID with age estimation
Children under 13 cannot get MitID, and visitors from abroad generally will not hold one.[4] A MitID-only gate turns them away, and the DSA guidelines say a platform should offer more than one age assurance method plus a redress mechanism.[10]
Facial age estimation is the usual second method: a selfie, an estimated age, no document. Per the guidelines, verification gives certainty about age and estimation gives an approximation.[10] Australia's Age Assurance Technology Trial measured a mean absolute error of 1.3 to 1.5 years for the best systems, and warned against testing estimation at an exact age limit without a buffer age.[17]
The trial also describes the fix: start with a low-friction method and, when the result is inconclusive near the threshold, escalate to another, ending if needed in a full documentary check.[17] In Denmark the order can be flipped: MitID first, estimation for users without it, a document for borderline cases. Age assurance compared goes deeper on thresholds.

- Offer a second method and a way to contest a refusal.[10]
- Set a buffer age above the legal threshold for estimation.[17]
- Keep the age group only: age verification should not entitle a platform to store more personal data than that.[10]
- Ask vendors how you are charged: per check, by monthly plan or both.
On cost: brokers pay MitID a price per authentication request and set their own end prices. The rate is published to brokers; we could not retrieve it as of 5 October 2026.[22]
How Didit helps with MitID age verification
MitID is live on Didit for eID verification. A completed sign-in returns the full name, a signed date of birth, a pseudonymised identifier (not the CPR number), the level of assurance (labelled Substantial) and a signature check. No address, no portrait. The signed date of birth proves age without a document photo.[16]
To switch it on, open the console and go to Workflows, the ID Verification step, Countries, Denmark, then tick MitID under "Wallets accepted". Users approve in the MitID app on the same phone, or scan a QR code from a computer. Didit never asks for the PIN.

The method chooser in the Didit hosted flow.

On a computer, a QR code hands the sign-in to the phone.
For users without MitID, age estimation costs $0.10 per check and runs with passive liveness. By Didit's own figures, its mean absolute error is 3.5 years overall and 1.5 years under 18. Adaptive Age Verification sends a borderline result to ID verification, with the document portrait face-matched to the age selfie. As a design, we recommend age estimation first, then an eID or a document for borderline cases. Using an eID as the adaptive fallback is not a documented product setting. See the age verification solution.
You pay per check. Only completed eID sign-ins are billed; MitID costs $0.25 (pricing). The document route uses NFC chip reading ($0.15), liveness and face match; the full KYC check is $0.33. Every live eID is on the eID verification page.
Didit provides
- MitID sign-in in the hosted flow or the SDK
- Age estimation with passive liveness
- The document route and the evidence of every check

Key takeaways
- A MitID sign-in carries the date of birth; an age-only flow returns only true or false.
- MitID is issued from age 13, so a login alone never proves adulthood.
- Online casinos must use an eID at account creation; MitID must be Substantial or higher.
- Give users without MitID a second method, with a buffer age and a document step.
Frequently asked questions
What does "MitID alder" mean?
It is Danish for "MitID age". A service reads the date of birth from a MitID sign-in or asks its broker for a yes or no on one age threshold, according to a certified broker's documentation.[14]
From what age can someone have MitID?
From age 13, and individual services may set a higher limit. A MitID login alone therefore does not show that a user is 15, 16 or 18.[1][4]
Can I check age with MitID without receiving the CPR number?
Yes. According to broker documentation, the CPR number comes only through a CPR match or for authorised public bodies. An age-only flow returns just the result for a threshold.[14][15]
Is MitID required for online gambling in Denmark?
For online casino, an eID must be used when the account is created, at the first login from a new device and when identity data changes. If the eID is MitID, the level must be Substantial or higher.[5]
What is AltID, and how is it different from MitID?
MitID is the sign-in. AltID is Denmark's official app for ID and proofs, for everyone over 13 with a MitID and a CPR number. Its first version holds an ID card and an age proof.[6]
Does Denmark have a social media age limit?
The government proposed one on 22 October 2025, per the Ministry of Digital Affairs: 15, or 13 and 14 with parental consent. We found no enacted statute in our sources as of 5 October 2026, so check the current status.[7]
Can facial age estimation replace MitID for an 18+ check?
Under the DSA guidelines, estimation for adult-only content is a temporary alternative while suitable verification is not readily available. For minimum ages below 18 it is acceptable when independently provided or audited.[10]
What does a MitID age check cost?
Brokers pay MitID a price per authentication request and set their own end prices. The rate is published to brokers; we could not retrieve it as of 5 October 2026.[22] Didit charges $0.25 per completed sign-in.
Do I pay for a cancelled MitID sign-in on Didit?
No. Only completed eID sign-ins are billed, at $0.25 (pricing). Cancelled, timed-out and failed ones are free.
