eID in Denmark: MitID, AltID and the rules for businesses
The eID in Denmark is MitID, held by 97.2% of people over 15. What it returns, the AML and gambling rules, AltID and the EUDI Wallet, and how to cover users without MitID.

In short
The eID in Denmark is MitID: in April 2026, 97.2% of people in Denmark over 15 had an active MitID, and 5.3 million users were registered.[1] A business that verifies identity in Denmark should accept MitID first and keep a document route for everyone else.
- The EU list shows MitID as notified under eIDAS at Substantial and High, dated 24 October 2022.[2]
- Private companies connect only through a certified MitID broker; the Agency for Digital Government lists 10.[3]
- AltID, the state app for an ID card and age proofs, is the first stage of Denmark's EUDI (European Digital Identity) Wallet.[4]
Denmark is one of the simplest countries to plan an eID (electronic identification) rollout for. One scheme, MitID, covers almost the whole population over 15, the law names it as the national eID, and the anti-money laundering (AML) rules already treat electronic identification as a reliable source. MitID handled 94.4 million transactions a month on average in 2025.[1]
This guide covers the Danish eIDs, the rules, the EUDI Wallet changes and the people MitID does not reach. If eID is new to you, start with what eID verification is.
Every eID in Denmark at a glance
Denmark has one national eID for people, a business version of it, and a new state app for ID and age proofs. NemLog-in is not a credential: it is the public sector's login broker, with about 35 million logins a month.[1]
| eID | Operator | Users | Credential | Scheme level of assurance and EU notification | Data returned | Private-sector access | Didit status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MitID | The MitID partnership: the Agency for Digital Government and Finance Denmark[5] | 5.3 million registered; 97.2% of people over 15 (April 2026)[1] | MitID app, code display, audio code reader, chip, password[2] | Substantial and High; notified 24 October 2022[2] | Full name, date of birth, a pseudonymised identifier, level of assurance[6] | Only through a certified broker[3] | Live |
| MitID Erhverv | Part of MitID[5] | About 1.3 million active business identities; 357,261 connected user organisations, counting companies, authorities and associations (September 2026)[1] | MitID used on behalf of a company[5] | No separate row on the EU list[2] | Not covered in our sources | 331,393 of those organisations are private companies (September 2026)[1] | On request |
| AltID | The Agency for Digital Government[7] | 281,390 citizens (4 August 2026)[7] | App with an ID card and age proofs (15+, 18+)[7] | Not yet certified; EU certification expected at the end of 2026[4] | ID card or an age proof[7] | Its relying-party registry "is not yet an eIDAS 2.0 relying party registry"[4] | On request |
The level column shows the level each scheme is notified at, not the level a provider labels a sign-in with.[2] MitID Erhverv replaced the NemID employee signature.[5]
A note on the EU list
The list's Official Journal reference for MitID (52020XC0408(02)) looks like the earlier NemID-era publication; the date above is the list's own.[2]
The main credential is the app, where the user approves with a swipe.[8]

What changes in 2026 and 2027.[4][14][15]
The acceptance duty in Article 5f(2) of eIDAS 2 (the EU regulation on electronic identification and trust services, Regulation (EU) 2024/1183) covers private companies that must use strong user authentication by law or contract, "only upon the voluntary request of the user". Micro and small enterprises are exempt.[14] The EUDI Wallet guide covers what accepting a wallet involves.
The rules: eID law, AML and gambling in Denmark
The MitID act
MitID rests on the Act on MitID and NemLog-in, lov nr. 783 of 4 May 2021, now consolidated as LBK nr. 333 of 19 March 2025. Section 1 defines MitID as "Den danske nationale elektroniske identifikationsordning" (the Danish national electronic identification scheme). The act also defines the broker role.[16] Public bodies follow executive order BEK nr. 968 of 10 June 2022.[17]
Anti-money laundering
The Danish AML act (hvidvaskloven) lets a business verify identity against a reliable and independent source, and names eID as an example.
§ 11, stk. 1, nr. 2Hvidvaskloven
"eksempelvis elektroniske identifikationsmidler, relevante tillidstjenester ..."
Source: Hvidvaskloven § 11, statute text[18]
The Danish Financial Supervisory Authority (Finanstilsynet) goes further. Its guidance says MitID "i mange tilfælde kan stå alene som kontrolkilde" (can in many cases stand alone as the source of verification) for customers outside enhanced due diligence, distance customers included. With NemID, that was allowed only for low-risk customers.[19]
From 10 July 2027 the EU AMLR (Anti-Money Laundering Regulation, (EU) 2024/1624) applies directly. Article 22(6)(b) accepts "the use of electronic identification means which meet the requirements of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 with regard to the assurance levels 'substantial' or 'high'".[15] MitID is notified at both.[2] The final draft standards of the EU Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA) of 30 September 2026, sent to the Commission and not yet law, treat Article 22(6) means as "the default option".[20]
Gambling and age
The Danish Tax Agency's legal guide sets out the online casino order: an eID is required when an account is created, at the first login from a new device and when identity data changes. "Hvis der anvendes MitID, skal sikringsniveauet være 'betydelig' eller højere" (if MitID is used, the level must be substantial or higher).[21]
For age checks, Denmark is one of the first five Member States to take up the EU age verification blueprint, whose proof of age "does not contain any identity data".[22] The EU guidelines under Article 28 of the Digital Services Act expect age verification for alcohol, gambling and pornographic content.[23] The MitID age verification post goes deeper.

What the user sees with MitID, the eID in Denmark
The user enters their MitID user ID, approves in the app with a swipe, and comes back signed in. A code display or chip replaces the app for people without a smartphone.[5][8]
On a phone, the MitID app opens on the same device; on a computer, a QR code moves the sign-in to the phone. Your service gets signed data back, not a photo of a card.

Simplified. Every service provider must go through a broker.[3]
Brokers pay the scheme a price per authentication request on your behalf. The agency sets it every year from expected volume and physical authenticators and adjusts it retroactively; brokers set their own end prices.[24] The figure is published to brokers, not to the public. The MitID broker guide explains the model.
Choosing eID schemes in Denmark by use case
Accept MitID first in every sector; the level and the extra checks change. Banking, fintech and gambling have written rules on the level; elsewhere, set it in your risk assessment and keep a document route.
| Use case | Accept first | What to add |
|---|---|---|
| Banks and fintech | MitID at Substantial or High | Document route for enhanced due diligence and customers without MitID[19] |
| Crypto | MitID, where you are an obliged entity under the AML act | The same AML steps as fintech[18] |
| Online gambling | MitID at substantial or higher | Repeat at a new device and on identity changes[21] |
| Telecom | MitID | No telecom-specific eID rule in our sources |
| Marketplaces | MitID or an age proof | Age checks for restricted goods[23] |
| Mobility and rentals | MitID | A driving licence check by document |

People without MitID: foreign residents, minors, cross-border customers
"You are not required to have a Danish CPR-number to get MitID": people without a CPR number use a passport or ID card and a P-code.[25] The MitID app can also read the chip in a passport to confirm who the user is.[8] But MitID starts at age 13, and individual services may set higher age limits.[25][5]
The gaps that remain:
- Children under 13, who cannot hold MitID.[25]
- New arrivals who have not set up MitID yet.
- Customers from other countries. In 2025, Danish services saw only 7,101 logins with foreign eIDs, against 128,042 logins with MitID in foreign services.[1]
Default route
Electronic identification
- MitID for Danish residents
- The customer's home eID for other Europeans
- Signed data, no document photo
AMLR Art. 22(6)(b)
Alternative route
Identity document
- Passport or ID card with chip reading
- Liveness and face match
- A recorded reason for the fallback
AMLR Art. 22(6)(a)
Under AMLA's final draft standards, a business using the document route must be able to justify why the customer could not be verified with the Article 22(6) means.[20] Record that reason in each case. On chip reading, see NFC eID verification and chip security; for neighbours, Sweden and Norway.
eID verification in Denmark: launch checklist
- Decide the level you need: Substantial or High for AML, substantial or higher for gambling.[19][21]
- Choose a certified broker, or a provider that connects through one.[3]
- Decide whether you need the CPR number (the Danish personal identification number), and on what legal basis.
- Add a document route with chip reading for users without MitID.
- Record the reason for every fallback.[20]
- Plan for outages; according to TV 2, MitID was down for hours on 31 March 2026.[26]
- Test AltID and EUDI Wallet acceptance before 24 December 2027.[14]
How Didit helps with eID verification in Denmark
MitID is live on Didit, next to BankID Sweden, the Finnish Trust Network, Smart-ID and Mobile-ID, with a document route in the same workflow. You do not need a broker contract of your own.
To turn it on in the console, go to Workflows, the ID Verification step, Countries, Denmark, and tick MitID under "Wallets accepted". With the workflows API, set methods.DNK.wallet. Didit never asks for the PIN.

The method chooser in the Didit hosted flow.

On a computer, a QR code hands the sign-in to the phone.
A sign-in returns the full name, the date of birth, a pseudonymised identifier (not the CPR number), the level of assurance (labelled Substantial) and a signature check. No address, no portrait. Results arrive by webhook or API.[6]
Users without MitID fall back to document verification with NFC (near-field communication) chip reading ($0.15), liveness and face match; the full KYC (know your customer) check is $0.33. Add AML screening at $0.20. Only completed eID sign-ins are billed; cancelled, timed-out and failed ones are free. A completed MitID verification costs $0.25 (pricing page), and every eID is on the eID verification page.
Didit adds MitID Erhverv and AltID on request, and EUDI Wallet acceptance is on Didit's roadmap. In Denmark today, those users can verify with the document route (chip reading, liveness, face match) and AML screening. Talk to us about MitID Erhverv or AltID.

Frequently asked questions
What is the eID in Denmark?
MitID is Denmark's national electronic ID. The law calls it the Danish national electronic identification scheme, and in April 2026, 97.2% of people in Denmark over 15 had an active MitID.[16][1]
Can a private company integrate MitID directly?
No. Every service provider must go through a certified MitID broker. The Agency for Digital Government listed 10 approved brokers on 2 July 2026.[3]
Is MitID notified under eIDAS?
Yes. The EU list of notified schemes shows MitID at Substantial and High, with a notification date of 24 October 2022.[2]
Is MitID enough for AML customer due diligence in Denmark?
Often, yes. The Danish FSA says MitID can in many cases stand alone as the source of verification for customers outside enhanced due diligence, distance customers included. Enhanced due diligence needs more.[19]
Can foreigners get MitID?
Yes. A Danish CPR number is not required: people without one use a passport or ID card and a P-code. MitID is available from age 13, and individual services may set higher age limits.[25][5]
What does MitID cost a business?
Brokers pay the scheme a price per authentication request, set every year from expected volume and physical authenticators and adjusted retroactively, and then set their own end prices. The figure is published to brokers, not to the public.[24] On Didit, a completed MitID verification costs $0.25.
What is the difference between MitID and AltID?
MitID is the login and eID. AltID is the state app for an ID card and age proofs (15+ and 18+), open to everyone 13 or older with MitID and a CPR number. The agency is building AltID out in stages as Denmark's EUDI Wallet.[7][4]
When must Danish businesses accept the EUDI Wallet?
Private companies that must use strong user authentication by law or contract must accept the EUDI Wallet by 24 December 2027, 36 months after the wallet implementing acts entered into force, and "only upon the voluntary request of the user". Micro and small enterprises are exempt.[14]
